my tummy is grumbling for food, serious food but i decided to wait until it’s 5pm, punch-out then head home for serious and (perhaps) healthy (and early) dinner. so i blob.
i was driving to the office when the sun was on my head earlier today and it struck me the haze is worse than it was this morning! the heat is darn scorching, and the strong wind just makes it worse; humid air is not helping with the 33celcius, i’m telling you..i couldn’t drive fast enough because of the sudden headache i was experiencing ( i don’t handle heat and coldness very good-anak khatulistiwa-) so i decided to take off my headscarf for some air..about 10minutes before i reached the gate, i decided i should put on my scarf back. i have to squint and search for a shady spot at the side of the road (which was almost impossible with all the trees gone by now..) and finally found one spot with a lovely rendang tree and stop there to put my scarf on.
while fixing the brooch, it came to me that less and less trees are seen in this area where i work. with the heatwave attacking the country ever so cruel (but of course, semua ini dugaan dari Ilahi..subhanallah) trees provide us with more oxygen and of course, once in a while shades us from the heat of the sun. even when we are under a green tree at night when there’s no sun to hide from, it still helps us feel less hot from the humidity because fresh oxygen is near. i love the fact that where i live now is still rich with tree, even though one wide area at the road side is been open for construction and all the trees were chopped down (sad!). i still have neighbors planting vegies and flowers and most trees are still where they are use to be so going back home, i know home would promise me something good.
i guess it’s like what they say; you’ll never how much something/someone meant to you, up until you lose it/them..
i promise to be more concern with the environment and save as much trees as i can ini ways that i can, and when it’s time to move to the new crib, i’ll make sure we’ll have plenty of greeneries.(light bulb on the head!!) maybe i’ll start a small campaign to ensure the community cares more for the faunas we have around us..
and of course, lets pray that less and less people do open burning at times like this. we are expecting El Nino somewhere this Aug, and 33-34 celcius will go up 3 notch higher when it’s finally here. we dont want to contribute to the already dreadful haze, do we?
so i quote…
Temperatures may go up by 3˚C with El Nino phenomenon
By YENG AI CHUN
GENTING HIGHLANDS: Brace yourself for hotter days. The El Nino phenomenon is coming.
And with warmer weather, the Government warns that the haze will worsen.
Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Douglas Uggah Embas said the Meteorological Department has reported the El Nino phenomenon.
“However, its full effect can only be gauged sometime in August,” he said.
El Nino is a climatic condition where abnormal warming of the Pacific Ocean causes dry weather in South-East Asia and northern Australia.
Uggah was speaking to reporters after launching the Genting Goes Green programme at First World Plaza, Genting Highlands Resort yesterday.
Malaysia experiences a hot and dry season in June, July and August with temperatures ranging between 33 °C to 34 °C. However, with the El Nino phenomenon, temperatures can rise by an additional 3 °C.
Uggah said with such hot and dry conditions, any open burning activity could make things worse.
He said the Asean Specialised Meteorological Centre satellite report had identified 125 hot spots in the country from May 25 to June 7.
The report also showed an increase of hot spots in Sumatra and Kalimantan with 996 and 108 hot spots respectively.
Uggah said the Air Pollution Index for various locations in the country had deteriorated slightly.
“This has caused it to be slightly hazy. The hazy situation happened because of a stable atmosphere with a high humidity level of above 85%.
“This causes pollutants like dust and emissions from vehicles and factories to be collected in the air, causing poor visibility,” he said.
At 5pm yesterday, 57% of measuring stations around the country recorded “moderate” readings while the remaining stations recorded “good” readings.
Cheras in Kuala Lumpur had the worst API reading with 96 while Port Klang recorded a reading of 87.
(to fellow smokers out there, maybe you guys should tone down your activity of smoking open-air just so not to add more harm..)
till then. be safe and say NO to open burning! and stop chopping trees.
